The Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has brought to public information phase the project and environmental impact study of the extension work of the dock at the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera, according to a notice published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE). The chairman of the Island Council, Casimiro Curbelo, stresses that this work which has been demanded by the insular society, is of vital importance to La Gomera, and will be reflected in the expansion of the docking line of the Gomeran port by 75 meters, with the aim of incorporating the island to the path of large cruise vessels.

The approximate execution time of the project, which also includes the refurbishment works of the port terminal, is between 12 and 18 months according to Curbelo, who notes that the ports in the Canary Islands have to be prepared to accommodate these cruise ships which are constantly getting bigger. One of the strategic guidelines laid down by the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the increasing number of calls at all ports of the Canary Islands and in particular at the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera, to encourage quality tourism with high purchasing power arriving with the cruise season.

Curbero is pleased with the attention which the needs of the Gomeran society have received from the Port Authority of Santa Cruz, and says that the insular claims were also transferred to the central government through both his performance as a senator as through national congressman Erasmo Armas. Curbelo stresses that the efforts resulted in a commitment to finance the 6 million euros required by the project, in addition to the financing of another major initiative, which is nearing completion on the esplanade of Roque de La Hila.

"Therefore, we speak of a key complex to overall economic development of the island, through which the current port capacity will be doubled”, he adds. According to the chairman of the insular institution, the works at Roque de la Hila involve the construction of an esplanade of 14 thousand square meters for container storage, which will promote strengthening of the business fabric of La Gomera and result in a reduction of merchandise costs.

Curbelo insists that "we speak of two projects which come to enhance the development of Gomeran society, as they strengthen the maritime communications with the exterior and will directly improve the quality of life of insular residents." The highest insular representative concludes that the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera is one of the leading ports in Spain in terms of passenger traffic, which will be greatly improved with the expansion of the last docking line.
